Objectives:
1] To discuss the purpose of the cervical framework, highlighting the changes in the 2020 version
2] To explore the basis of clinical reasoning and shared decision-making; underpinning the cervical framework to inform safe and effective practice
3] To critically analyze the key issues for the patient history and the physical examination in the examination of a patient presenting with head and / or neck pain that may be a symptom of an underlying vascular pathology or dysfunction

Lisa Carlesso is an Assistant Professor and physiotherapist in the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University. She worked clinically for 25 years, obtaining FCAMPT status. Her graduate work focused on issues related to manual therapy, adverse events, consent and the collection of physiotherapy specific data in this regard. With this expertise, she contributed to a panel discussion at the IFOMPT conference in Rotterdam in 2008 and subsequently lead an international survey on the topic of manipulative practice for IFOMPT member countries. She was a contributor to the first IFOMPT cervical framework in 2012 and for the recent update lead the shared decision-making, informed consent and medico-legal framework section. Her research is broadly focused on optimizing outcomes for people with chronic musculoskeletal disorders by 1. Understanding the complex mechanisms of acute and persistent pain through pain phenotyping, 2. Improving prognosis and treatment of chronic musculoskeletal disorders and 3. Knowledge translation of evidence to improve clinical practice. This includes evaluating strategies to improve entry-level pain education for physiotherapists.
Alison is Professor and Director of Physical Therapy at Western University. Alison has a strong research profile, with >£2M funding, £10M research centre funding and >145 publications in high impact journals. Alison has supervised >25 research degrees and >200 MSc students. Alison’s research is at the forefront of enhancing our understanding of the assessment and management of musculoskeletal disorders, focused on precision rehabilitation for spinal problems. Alison leads the IFOMPT cervical framework research group that developed the initial framework and this updated version. Alison is Associate Editor of PlosOne, on the Editorial Board of Musculoskeletal Science and Practice, and chaired the IFOMPT Standards Committee 2004-2020. Alison has been awarded a fellowship of the MACP, Honorary membership of the OMT Espana Terapia Manual Ortopedica, Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and Life membership of IFOMPT for her national and international contribution to the development of musculoskeletal physiotherapy through education and research.
