Overview:

This course is an introduction to a common problem in men, causing penile deformity and affecting 10% of the population.

Peyronie’s disease greatly impacts on sexual function, psychological wellbeing and relationships in affected men, with only 12% recovering without treatment.

Scar tissue in the penis arises from trauma or post-operative conditions such as radical prostatectomy or pelvic surgery, causing reduced blood flow to the penis and the formation of plaques. This may present as a soft tissue injury, leading to pain, penile curvature, indentation and shortening over a period of time, which is greatly distressing to men and limits sexual function.

Recognizing a gap in treatment, particularly in the acute phase of the condition, and as part of her PhD studies, Dr. Jo Milios has recently conducted an RCT assessing the benefits of therapeutic ultrasound and will share her findings, which have proven to be highly beneficial.

This course will also include practical strategies any physiotherapist can provide to patients, dealing with this condition and an opportunity to discuss clinical cases.

Join Dr. Jo Milios and Pelvic Health Solutions for this online course to learn about Peyronie's disease in men's health physiotherapy.

Audience:

This online course is open to physiotherapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists, naturopaths, chiropractors, medical doctors, and any other licensed health care provider.

The instructors
Pelvic Health Solutions

Pelvic Health Solutions (PHS) is an evidence-based teaching company that aims to educate and empower physiotherapists, healthcare professionals, and everyday people about pelvic health.

PHS was founded in 2010 out of the need to develop pelvic health resources in Ontario at a time when it was an under-serviced health concern. PHS provides continuing education courses, mentoring, and clinical resources for a variety of practitioners with the goal of equipping them to deliver evidence-based, biopsychosocial assessment and treatment of pelvic health problems in our province and abroad.

Our company also exists as a way to connect people experiencing pelvic health concerns to pelvic health physiotherapists in their area. PHS has ultimately blossomed into a community of curious people who are committed to providing hope and healing to those who suffer from pelvic health issues.

Dr. Jo Milios
Men's Health Physiotherapist

Jo Milios is an Australian Physiotherapist who has a special interest in Men’s Health, focusing on Prostate Cancer (PCa), Urinary and Erectile Dysfunction, Pelvic Pain, Peyronie’s disease (PD), Exercise and Yoga. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Physiotherapy) in 1993, the big gap seen in Men’s Health proved pivotal in her decision to specialize from 2005. Recently completing PhD studies at the University of Western Australia , Jo investigated quality of life outcomes in men undergoing surgery for PCa via a large randomized controlled trial aimed at reducing the impact of urinary continence and erectile dysfunction. A second RCT utilizing therapeutic ultrasound to treat scar tissue in the 1 in 6 men who develop Peyronie’s disease following treatment for PCa was also completed.

Jo has presented her research findings at several international conferences including WCPT15, 17 & 19, APCC 2014-18, CSM 2020 and locally at Men’s Sheds , Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and ANZUS Conferences 2011-2018. Recent publications include papers in the ANZ Continence Journal (2018, 2019) and BMC Urology (2019) with further papers in review, Jo provides workshops throughout Australia and internationally, lectures at Charles Sturt and Curtin University and in 2012 established, ‘PROST! Exercise 4 Prostate Cancer Inc.’a not-for profit organization, which provides an exercise and peer support program for ANY man diagnosed with PCa.

Jo’s passion is education and she will happily provide this in any forum- in person, on-line , via TeleHealth or through the Men’s Health Physiotherapy Facebook group which Physiotherapists can access.
